The fruits on the tilted plates look as if they might roll off at any moment, yet mysteriously, they never fall. This painting, created over six years, captures the passage of time—from bright red ripe apples to withered and rotting ones. For Cézanne, apples symbolized the unchanging order and weight of reality.
